Is There A Difference Between Loc-tite And Permatex Threadlocker?

Question by renderman50: Is There A Difference Between Loc-tite And Permatex Threadlocker?
I went out to get some Blue Loc-tite threadlocker (medium strength) and when I got home I noticed it was Permatex brand blue threadlocker. Is there a difference between these two brands? They seem to offer the same exact stuff. Are they the same company? Is one better than the other? I’m not worried about having the Permatex brand threadlocker. I’m just curious.

Thanks.

I can’t swear to it, but I believe they are similar products made by two different companies. Nothing unusual about that!

They are essentially the same. Loc-tite came first and Permatex and a few others got in on the market with their version. I have used most brands and not noticed any real difference between them all. Most people refer to them all as Loc-tite, like a generic term.

The only difference is the brand name. there may be some chemical difference because of the brand patents, but they both do the same job just as well.

They’re the same chemically. Don’t worry about it.

Go to the spec. sheets. There will be answers for torque to tighten/loosen, temperature range, solvent resistance and also cost per thread treated. In industry, the locker chosen is the cheapest which will do the job in question. As an individual with limited usage, you may want to choose the one which has the best overall performance and the longest shelf life. If you plan to take things apart, you also don’t want to get the locker which will result in fastener breakage when disassembling.
